WARNING: THE FOLLOWING SCENES OF ANTISEMITISM EXPERIENCED BY BE'TLV AND IT'S MEMBERS

Unfortunately our Canadian communities have toxic culture of Antisemitism, racism, and transphobia that local organizations continue to ignore. Local organizations have stood by while this toxic culture has spread.

Our organization has been subject to frequent attacks.

We made international news when we had our office space vandalized, cash stolen, and electronics seized by police in their investigation into a the owners of the building space.

Media outlets incorrectly dubbed the incident as a "staged hate crime." In fact the owners allegedly targeted us to incite the local Jewish and LGBTQ2IA communities. Local community organizations rallied to support our alleged abusers and refuse to correct their mistake.

Additionally:

  • Our directors are routinely subject to derogatory comments about being Ingenious or Latinx and Jewish. The individuals claim that it is impossible to belong to more than one community. This has gone so far as individuals trying to have our Latin and other cultural events cancelled by harassing participating vendors and venue owners.

  • Our belongings stolen and vandalized

  • Volunteers have from marginalized communities have been publicly outted - putting them at personal risk.

  • Our online accounts, both personal and business targeted

  • False information has been spread in our community with the sole purpose of damaging volunteers reputations and livelihood.

  • Vendors and volunteers have been pressured to discontinue partnerships and financial support

  • Volunteers have received racist materials and death threats

In September our Pride event was “Zoom bombed” in which one participant exposed himself while children were watching, Antisemitic and racial slurs were shouted at performers, Entertainers were personally threatened - and most disturbingly a video was shared of an individual murdering Jewish individuals. These videos were graphic and unfortunately there were many participants feeling emotional distressed after the fact.

The incident was reported to the Winnipeg Police, who to date have done little to address this matter.

We don’t look for anger - we do not encourage blame. Instead we encourage love and action.

We ask our allies to make statements denouncing Antisemitism, Racism, and all forms of discrimination. This is not just about us. We are only one group of many who are feeling attacked, marginalized, and unsupported at this time.

Take a stand against racism, amplify voices in your community, make room for LGBTQ Jews,  BIPOC and transgender folk and provide a safe space for everyone. If you claim you are Anti-racist, but do nothing to help marginalized people in your own community, then you are still part of the problem.
